Salgados, Mirano off to good start in National Chess Championships



Lennon Heart Salgados and Kevin Mirano, playing under the banner of Far Eastern University Chess Team got off to a blazing start by posting victories in the opening round of the 2013 National Chess Championships for Men and Women's at the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) canteen in Vito Cruz, Manila, over the weekend.

Salgados defeated no.62 Christian Hernandez while the Aklan bet Mirano toppled no. 63 Keiffer Pelias.

“The first round is one of the toughest rounds in any tournament. It usually sets the tone of how you’re going to perform,” said the Cagayan de Oro City native Salgados, the tournament top seed.

"I hope to perform well in this event," added the 2nd seed Mirano.

The usual suspects made their presence felt early.

No.3 Steven James Dacanay, No.4 Marc Christian Nazario, No.5 Daryl Unix Samantila, No.6 Melwyn Kenneth Baltazar, No.7 Vince Angelo Medina, No.8 Melvin Salutan, No.9 Bryan Barcelon and No.10 Antonio Chavez Jr.

Dacanay routed Chris Cuntapay; Nazario subdued  John Merill Jacutina; Baltazar dealt Rey Rabago; Medina routed Michael Solomon Alcantara; Salutan smashed Belomeo Reboldela ; Barcelon nipped Manolo Angelo Martinez; Chavez walloped Joel Ambas.

No.11 Andrew Casiano and No.12 Efren Arguelles also opened their accounts with full point each.

Casiano scalped Amando Labarda and Arguelles outplayed Gerry Yulo.

Meanwhile the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NFCP) headed by Chairman/President Prospero "Butch" Pichay Jr. is grateful to the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) for hosting the qualifying round of the National Chess Championships.

Chairman Pichay also reiterated its goal to popularize the game of chess and provide nationwide chess education.

The tournament organized by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) and supported by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC). Tournament director is NCFP Executive Director GM Jayson Gonzales.

Meanwhile, top seed Alexis Anne Osena beat Ma.Clark Ancar Pernites to lead the way in the women's play.-Marlon Bernardino-
