TWO PINOYS SHARE TOP HONORS IN ITALY CHESS MEET

GRANDMASTER candidate Roland Salvador and International Master elect Virgilio Moreno Vuelban toppled their sixth and final round opponent to share the top honors in the just concluded XX Festival Internazionale di Scacchi "Città di Lucca" Chess Championships was held in Scacchi, Italy, recently.

The pride of San Jose Delmonte, Bulacan Salvador (2464), who needed one GM norm to complete his GM status outpointed Italian IM Doriano Tocchioni while Fide Master Vuelban, who hails from Cagayan de Oro City who needed to raise his Elo 2390 to 2400 to obtain his IM title crushed Italian NM Daniele Parrini.

Salvador and Vuelban, both backed up by Philippe J. Lhuillier, Philippine Ambassador to Italy, finish identical 5.0 points apiece in six outings with the same 20.5 bucholz tie break points enroute the coveted plum.

In a recent interview Vuelban, also the president of Filipino Chess Club in Rome, Italy revealed that Philippe J. Lhuillier, Philippine Ambassador to Italy invited world's youngest GM Wesley So, Asia's First GM Eugene Torre and NCFP president Prospero "Butch" Pichay Jr., to visit Rome, Italy.

"Inimbitahan ni Philippe J. Lhuillier, Philippine Ambassador to Italy sina Wesley (So), Eugene (Torre) at Cong. (Butch) Pichay na bumisita dito sa Roma pagkatapos ng World Chess Olympiad sa Dresden," said Vuelban, also nephew of Misamis Oriental governor Oscar Moreno.

So is one of the five members of the RP bound to 2008 World Chess Olympiad in Dresden, Germany on November 12 to 25 while Torre, on the other hand was taps by Pichay to be the team captain of RP chess team.

Torre and fellow GM Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr., begged off to participate in the qualification tournament for the RP Chess Team in World Chess Olympiad due to varying reason.
