Ibanez grabs solo lead in National Chess Championships



Individual Standing after Round 7: 
(Men's division)
6.0 points---Piokit Ibanez
5.5 points---Bryan Barcelon, Rolly Parondo Jr., Franz Barretto, Efren Arguelles, Andrew Casiano
(Women's division)
6.0 points---Luzelle Bermundo
5.5 points---Crissa Canada
5.0 points---Arvie Lozano

Piokit Ibanez defeated erstwhile co-leader Charles Daniel Abuzo in the sixth then drew with Efren Arguelles in the seventh round  to assume the solo lead in the on-going 2013 National Chess Championships for Men and Women's at the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) canteen in Vito Cruz, Manila.

A  win  and a draw enabled Ibanez to grab the solo lead with 6.0 points in the tournament organized by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) headed by Chairman/President Prospero "Butch" Pichay Jr. and Secretary-General Abraham "Bambol" Tolentino Jr. and supported by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC). 

Ibanez is now half a point ahead of Arguelles, Bryan Barcelon, Rolly Parondo Jr., Franz Barretto, and Andrew Casiano.

Arguelles, earlier beat Joseph Navarro in the sixth; Barcelon toppled Robert Cacho in the sixth then split the point with Rolly Parondo Jr., in the seventh round; Barretto halved the point with Antonio Chavez Jr. in the sixth then subdued Jan Nigel Galan in the seventh round and Parondo upset Kevin Mirano in the sixth round.

In the women's play, Luzelle Bermundo edged former solo leader Crissa Canada in the sixth then beat Mariel Batulan in the seventh round to grab the solo lead with 6.0 points. 

Canada bounced back in contention by beating Janena Marie Regencia in the seventh round to raised her total 5.5 points for solo second place.

Arvie Lozano drew with Batulan in the sixth then defeated Quinna Louise Soler in the seventh round to climb at solo 3rd place with 5.0 points.

Tournament director is NCFP Executive Director GM Jayson Gonzales while International Arbiter Gene Poliarco is the chief arbiter in the said chessfest.-Marlon Bernardino-
